Module 2: ADHD, OCD, Tourette’s: Part I
This module continues the journey through the Brain Developmental Blueprint focusing on development beyond 3 years of age. It is designed to introduce the learner to Hyperkinetic Disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and Tourette’s syndrome. We also review comorbidity, epidemiology and prevalence.
This physical training has already taken place and can now be undertaken as an online module.
The main focus of this module is on ADHD. We review traditional tools to diagnose ADHD. ADHD is the number one disorder among the youth worldwide. It is also the fastest growing issue in the adult populations. We review the physical and neurological examination of a child, adolescent and adult. We go through the motor and sensory milestones in normal child development. We focus on primitive and postural reflex evaluations and remediation exercises, as well. In this stage of development, muscle tone, primitive reflexes, dominance profiles and core stability are the main focus of the exam and treatment. We will give hands on practical experience in assessment and treatment protocols, focused on these initial developmental stages. We will discuss the primary network responsible for all human behavior and abnormal behavior. It connects the Prefrontal Cortex, the Basal Ganglia, the Cerebellum and the Thalamus which is the primary loop in each hemisphere that regulates behavior. Developmental imbalances in this network is the primary core issue and that is why it is so important to be explored and well understood. The development and function of this network and the various subnetworks will be discussed in each module, focusing on different areas. In this module we will review in detail the neurology of the Basal Ganglia and its relationship to hyper and hypokinetic movement and behavior. We review the relationship between direct, indirect and Hyper-direct pathways, dopaminergic pathways and the interaction with the Prefrontal Cortex and the Frontal Lobe.
Learners will also start their exploration into their own brain development and will be introduced to various tools that Dr. Melillo has developed in children and adults to assess brain development. We will also present various live and videotaped cases of children with ADHD, OCD, Tourette’s and discuss as a group the various treatment option. The learners will also be introduced to interventions for hyperkinetic disorders and primarily right brain disorders using the tools of the so called Digital Health (such as virtual reality, computer games, frequencies of sound and vibration and laser).
